Why Do My Circuit Breakers Keep Tripping?

If your circuit breaker keeps shutting off, it’s more than just annoying—it’s your home’s built-in safety system doing its job. But frequent tripping is a warning sign that something needs attention. Here’s what might be causing it:

Overloaded Circuits

Plugging too many high-demand devices into the same circuit can overload it. When that happens, the breaker trips to prevent overheating and a possible electrical fire.

Short Circuits

A short circuit happens when a hot wire touches a neutral wire, creating a surge of current. Your breaker reacts instantly to prevent danger, but this kind of issue should always be inspected by a licensed electrician.

Ground Faults

Especially common in kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor areas, a ground fault occurs when electricity escapes the wiring path and flows to the ground—often through a person. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) help protect you, but repeated trips are a sign of trouble.

Faulty Wiring or Equipment

Outdated wiring, damaged cords, or malfunctioning appliances can trigger a breaker. It’s important to diagnose and resolve these issues before they cause bigger problems.

Don’t Just Reset the Breaker—Fix the Root Issue

If you’re resetting the same breaker more than once, it’s time to call a professional. Ignoring the problem won’t make it go away—and could lead to more expensive or dangerous situations down the road.
