The Hidden Danger of Aluminum Wiring in Your Home
If you own an older home—or are thinking about buying one—it’s important to know what type of wiring is behind your walls. From the mid-1960s through the mid-1970s, many homes were built with aluminum wiring instead of copper. At the time, it was seen as a cost-effective solution. But today, we know that aluminum wiring poses serious risks, including an increased chance of electrical fires.
At Amps & Volts Electric, your family’s safety is our priority. Here’s what you should know about aluminum wiring and why it may be time to schedule an inspection.
Why Aluminum Wiring is Dangerous
Unlike copper, aluminum expands and contracts more with temperature changes. Over time, this causes connections in outlets, switches, and panels to loosen. Loose connections can overheat, spark, and eventually lead to fires.
Because of this, many insurance companies now view aluminum wiring as a liability—and in some cases, they may refuse coverage until it’s repaired or replaced.
How to Tell if Your Home Has Aluminum Wiring
Since most wiring is hidden behind walls, it can be difficult to know what kind of wiring your home has. But if your house was built between 1965 and 1975, there’s a good chance aluminum wiring was used.
Here’s where you might be able to spot it:
- In unfinished basements, attics, or garages where wiring is exposed
- Printed or embossed markings on the outer jacket of wires
- Look for the letters “AL” or the word “Aluminum” marked every few feet along the wire
Important note: Even copper-clad aluminum (marked “CU-clad”) is still considered a concern.
